Global Market Overview | August 2026
According to ETO Markets analysis, global markets opened the week on a stronger footing as technology shares led gains. Amazon rose 15% after stronger cloud growth reinforced confidence in AI-related demand, while US equities closed higher despite ongoing uncertainty around rates, energy prices and geopolitics.
Attention now turns to the US employment report, with payroll growth expected at around 91,000. SpaceX will also report its first earnings as a publicly listed company, making it one of the most important tests for AI-linked capital expenditure and infrastructure investment.
AI Trade Enters Discipline Phase
For much of the past 18 months, markets rewarded companies linked to artificial intelligence, often prioritising future growth over near-term profitability. That phase is now changing.
Investors are no longer only asking whether companies are spending on AI. They want evidence that investment can translate into revenue growth, stronger margins and sustainable free cash flow. SpaceX has therefore become a key bellwether for the broader AI investment cycle.
SpaceX Faces Valuation Test
SpaceX remains positioned across several powerful long-term themes, including Starlink satellite communications, reusable launch technology, AI-enabled infrastructure and Starship development. These businesses helped justify one of the markets richest valuations.
However, the stock has retreated from post-listing highs as investors reassess fundamentals. The key question is whether SpaceX can generate the earnings and cash flow required to support its valuation.
Capital Spending Under Scrutiny
The main concern is the scale of capital expenditure. SpaceX continues to invest heavily across Starlink, Starship, launch infrastructure and AI-enabled technologies. These investments may create long-term value, but they also pressure current earnings and free cash flow.
This issue extends across the technology sector. Microsoft, Meta, Alphabet, Amazon and others have committed record spending to AI data centres, advanced semiconductors and cloud infrastructure. Markets have supported these plans, but patience is becoming more conditional.
Guidance Matters More Than Earnings
Investors may focus less on headline earnings and more on management guidance. Starlink subscriber growth, margin expansion and free cash flow will be central, as Starlink is increasingly viewed as the business capable of funding SpaceXs longer-term ambitions.
Updates on Starship will also be important. Testing setbacks have reminded markets that execution risk remains high. Launch frequency, government contracts and commercial utilisation will also be watched as signals of revenue diversification.
Lock-Up Risk Adds Pressure
Another near-term issue is the expiry of insider lock-up restrictions. As more shares become eligible for sale, markets may price in the risk of increased supply.
Even if earnings are solid, insider selling could create short-term pressure. This does not necessarily weaken the long-term investment case, but it adds uncertainty while expectations remain elevated.
Broader Market Signals
Outside technology, China‘s central bank pledged liquidity support to stimulate activity, while zinc climbed to a yearly high of USD 3,650 per tonne on production adjustments and maintenance outages in China. Oil erased most of the previous week’s 23% gain after President Trump cancelled proposed military strikes, easing immediate Middle East supply concerns.
Australias home prices posted their largest monthly decline since December 2022. In Japan, the Bank of Japan intervened in currency markets, lifting the yen by around 5% from recent lows.
Outlook
Looking ahead, ETO Markets expects SpaceX and AMD earnings, US labour data, ISM surveys, factory orders, trade data, China PMIs, OPEC+ decisions and ongoing US-Iran tensions to remain key market drivers.
In this environment, ETO Markets continues to emphasise valuation discipline, cash-flow visibility and capital efficiency. AI remains one of the strongest structural themes of the decade, but markets are entering a phase where execution matters more than ambition.
